How MagicJack Works
A MagicJack is a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) device that allows users to connect their home telephones to their computer in order to make free calls. A number of influential magazines such as the L.A. Times, CNBC, PC Magazine, and the New York Times strongly recommend MagicJack. It is, by far, the cheapest option for home telephone service in the U.S. While the Magic Jack requires an initial investment, there are never any monthly bills or call fees.
How MagicJack Works
A MagicJack has a USB attachment on one end and a telephone jack on the other. This allows the user to plug the MagicJack directly into a computer via any available USB port, connect the MagicJack to a telephone line, and begin sending and receiving telephone calls for free. The MagicJack uses a VoIP protocol to convert audible information into a digital signal and send it over the Internet to the MagicJack network centers where the signal is distributed through the MagicJack telephone network like a regular call. Likewise, incoming calls pass through the MagicJack network, travel across the Internet, and arrive at the user’s telephone.
Applications
A MagicJack is generally only used to transfer phone calls over the Internet. It is portable and can be used anywhere in the world. Users can also setup conference calls through MagicJack that allow anyone in the world to contact the conference number and use a prearranged, ten-digit code to access the conference call.
Advantages
A MagicJack has several important advantages that distinguish it from other VoIP services. For example, with other VoIP services, the user is required to pay a monthly service fee. Also, other VoIP services do not allow the user to take their telephone service with them while traveling, while MagicJack does. MagicJack can set up conference calls, make calls to anywhere in the world, and does not list the user’s telephone number in directory assistance listings.
Disadvantages
While a MagicJack does not require a monthly service fee, it requires an annual service fee. Also, although MagicJack allows users to take their telephone service with them, the device only works if it is connected to a computer. Therefore, the user would only be able to make calls while using a laptop or desktop computer at his/her destination.
