How to Watch Movies on the Internet
Although there are a wide variety of places to rent movies online for a fee (such as iTunes, MovieLink and STARZ! Ticket), when it comes to watching movies online for free, most people assume that it can only be done illegally (such as watching copyrighted content that has been uploaded to YouTube or downloading a movie through a file-sharing program). However, although they are not as well-known as their illegal counterparts, there are actually a variety of websites that allow visitors to legally watch movies online for free.
Hulu
Hulu is quickly becoming one of the largest video websites on the Internet. Founded by NBC and News Corp in March of 2007, Hulu not only allows visitors to watch popular television shows for free, but also movies. Currently, Hulu offers over one hundred movies that can be watched for free online. Of all the places that offer free movies online, Hulu has the largest amount of popular movies from major Hollywood studios like MGM and Warner Bros.
Movies that are rated G, PG or PG-13 can be watched without signing up for a Hulu account. If a movie is rated R, you will need to sign- up for a free Hulu account in order to watch it. The majority of the movies on Hulu contain between five and ten minutes of advertising, which is dispersed throughout the duration of the movie.
Archive.org
In addition to providing the Wayback Machine, Archive.org hosts a variety of movies that can be legally watched online. While many are older movies that are in the public domain as a result of their copyright expiring, Archive.org also offers independent documentaries and foreign films.
Documantis
If you want to legally watch documentaries online, Documantis hosts a wide variety of documentaries on their website. In addition to political and religious documentaries (which are the two most popular categories on the website), Documantis offers documentaries on other subjects like pop culture, science and travel. The only downside to Documantis is its instrusive advertising, including pop- unders, interstitials and ad units with sound that begins automatically.
Emol.org
Although it has a smaller selection than Archive.org, Emol.org offers a variety of free movies to watch online, including classic B-movie horror films, cartoon, sports movies and documentaries. You can also legally download any film from Emol.org and burn it onto a DVD disc.
Public Domain Movie Torrents
While a torrent with a copyrighted movie is not legal, Public Domain Movie Torrents allows you to legally download torrents with movies that are in the public domain. The movies on this website can be downloaded in multiple formats, including versions for PDAs, Apple iPods, Playstation PSPs and Microsoft Zunes.
