DVD Mastering
DVD Mastering is a digital optimization procedure that eventually readies a DVD project for duplication or reproduction. DV mastering is done for both audio and audiovisual projects, and with the right knowledge and software, can be done by just about anyone.
DVD mastering procedures generally vary with the type of services sought and the form of source materials provided. For audio, the customer usually submits the DVD mastering service with a mix down of the finished product in two-channel digital and analog tracks. The mastering service in turn runs these tracks in a mastering studio for providing the required level of balancing and equalizing and the end result will be a digitally enhanced, far superior, product (what is typically called a digital master).
On the other hand, audiovisual source materials may include movie files, VHS film, digital photography, or a reel tape, in conjunction with a soundtrack. In audio visual DVD mastering, the process also amounts to full fledged production and compilation. That is, if the provided material is something like that of a wedding function, with the music tracks and photos of the event included, and the customer categorically requesting to make it a full length video. In such cases, special effect transitions, graphics, and menus may also become part of the mastering process, and this procedure is called DVD authoring.
Regardless of whether a project is either audiovisual or audio, DVD replication is standard for large runs. In such cases, from the digital master, a glass master is made, which is then used to make thousands or even millions of copies as per the requirement at hand. DVD replication preserves higher data integrity than DVD duplication or burning, which is a technique usually used for personal projects or taking few number of copies of a project.
Most DVD mastering services also offer sleeve printing and labeling as part of the mastering package. But the price may vary with the printing technology used.
Applications of DVD Mastering
DVD mastering comes in handy for anyone who desires to create an audiovisual or audio project with a professional look and feel – while still being able to produce multiple copies of the same project. Software developers, small and large businesses, film school students, promotional marketers, and artists of various disciplines are just a few of the groups of people who may frequently require DVD mastering services.
