One of the things that makes TV picture quality more attractive is its contrast ratio. The contrast ratio is a simple concept, but it can significantly improve a TV set’s picture quality. Contrast ratio is defined as the difference between the brightest color (white) and the darkest color (black).

Today’s TV sets can come with a wide variety of contrast ratios. Most TVs perform this feature differently and there are a number of ways to measure contrast ratios which can affect results. Most TV viewers are definitely good judges of contrast ratio.

The Difference Between Black & White

For those who want the best picture possible, the more contrast there is between the brightest and the darkest colors, the more stunning the picture will be. Generally speaking, CRT monitors (traditional TV sets) performed best in offering the highest contrast ratios. However with the advance in LCD and plasma technology, these two popular forms of monitors are gaining ground. Believe it or not, many LCD TV sets are unable to create true black. The color they do create is a very, very dark grey. This can have an effect on the picture and it is why some experts still state the best available picture still comes from CRT monitors.

How to Shop for a TV with a High Contrast Ratio

If you are shopping for a TV, one of the concerns should be to find one with a high contrast ratio. Of course, you can take a look at the specs, but again measuring the contrast can be done in several ways and may not be a good guideline. Instead, at the TV shop, look at a variety of TVs in the class you are shopping for, adjust the contrast and see which one has the best overall picture. While contrast ratio is important, other features are just as important to many shoppers. Don’t base your purchase only on the contrast ratio.
