How to Use iSight
The iSight is a webcam built by Apple that comes in both internal and external variants. The iSight features excellent quality and includes several tools that allow the user to produce professional pictures and videos. In addition, the Apple iSight is capable of video conferencing and remote access for surveillance purposes. The iSight includes a built-in microphone and gets its power from the computer itself so it does not require its own outlet. The webcam has a 640 x 480 resolution and can clearly view objects as close as 55 mm to the lens. The following will detail more extensive features of the iSight and provide tips on how to use this device.
Internal VS External
The internal and external iSights differ in both design and functionality. The internal iSight is built with a plastic lens, uses a CMOS Active Pixel sensor, stays focused on a fixed point, and includes an internal USB 2.0 wire that connects it to the computer. The external iSight, however, features a charge-coupled device for high-quality imaging, a FireWire 400 cable to connect it to the computer, and a built-in microphone that can pick up noises from across the room. Another difference between the internal and external versions of the iSight is that the internal version includes drivers for Windows XP and Windows Vista while the external version does not.
Take Pictures
As with any camera, the iSight’s main feature is that it can take high-quality images at any time. With image editing software that is included with the iSight, users are also able to add themes and other special effects to any of the pictures that they take. As the iSight is capable of taking pictures as close as 55 mm away from the lens, users are able to make their own, professional images whenever and wherever they choose.
Make A Video
The iSight’s sleek design and powerful recording capabilities allow the user to create fully-functional home movies in a matter of minutes. While the internal version of the iSight cannot be moved, the external version includes a rather long FireWire cable that can be stretched far enough to allow the user to move the camera around the room. The iSight’s clear, high definition recording capabilities create a perfect video every time the user turns it on. Videos can also be stored in any size as the iSight will save the video to the user’s hard drive.
Video Conferencing
In addition to creating videos, iSight allows users to participate in video conferences with other computer users who have a webcam. While iSight does not sponsor video conferencing itself, there are a number of free programs that do allow video conferences to take place. For example, Windows Live Messenger, Google Talk, AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), and Yahoo Messenger are all capable of linking two or more individuals in a video conference. ISight does include its own tools and features that facilitate this task, however, such as the audio/video muting option that allows the user to mute the conversation and/or place a lens cover over the lens to prevent a visual contact.
Apple Remote Desktop
The Apple Remote Desktop is a software made for the iMac and other Apple products that allows users to access their computer while they are away from home. When Apple Remote Desktop is combined with the iSight, users are able to activate their webcam even while they are thousands of miles away from home and use it as a remote surveillance camera. This allows the user to check on his/her home while he/she is gone. When activated through Apple Remote Desktop, the iSight can be controlled in the exact same way that it could be from home and allows the user to zoom and pan.
