What is a Chalkboard Made Of?
A chalkboard can be made of many different things. To begin with, a chalk board can be made of black or grey stone slate. However, these are very basic chalkboards that are not really used. The modern day chalkboard, however, is still something used to this day and is created by taking taking porcelain enamel and attaching it to very durable steel to act as a base. This creates the green chalkboard that many students are used to seeing in classrooms.
How is a Chalkboard Made?
The first step in making a chalkboard is to prepare the steel base. This is what will ensure that the chalkboard works. To do this, the steel has to be washed and inspected to ensure that there are no imperfections. Once this has been done, a silica slip is added to both sides of the steel. It is then sent into a furnace and fired at an extremely high temperature. This forces the steel to soften and allow the slip to attach to the base.
Following removal from the furnace, add the surface compounds. This is the porcelain enamel. Allow them to dry and then, once they’ve dried, send them to a furnace to be fired. However, when you remove them from the furnace, be sure to put them into a cooling room so that they cool at a controlled temperature. This prevents any buckling of the steel and ensures that the product is in pristine shape.
Laminate a fiberboard onto the surface of the chalkboard. Then add the finishing touches such as wood around the actual chalkboard and a chalktray to hold any chalk. Now that the chalkboard is made, it is important to test it with chalk. Typically, the chalk is made of calcium sulfate which creates the white powdery marks on the board. And with an eraser, they can be removed.
