A PSP (PlayStation Portable) is a portable device created by Sony. It can be used for playing games, surfing the Internet and communicating with people. The PSP was first released in 2004. After the original PSP release, the PSP Slim & Lite, the PSP 3000 and the PSP Go were developed. The PSP was the first hand-held game console to use an optical disc format to store data. Today, it is one of the most successful hand-held consoles in the world, right after Nintendo.

How a PSP Works
The PSP’s basic design includes an integrated circuit connected to a 4” screen, built-in microphone and built-in speakers. All PSP models are compatible with each other, the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation 3. Likewise, all PSP models can connect to the Internet and share files whenever a WiFi connection is available.

Applications
A PSP can be connected to a microphone or headset in order to use Skype VoIP for phone calls. It can be connected to a PlayStation 3 from a remote location via an Internet connection in order to allow the user to transfer files to and from the PlayStation 3, view files on the PlayStation 3, and control audio and video files. Similarly, a PSP can turn a PlayStation 2 or 3 on or off from a distance. These features are commonly referred to as “Remote Play.”

Advantages
PSPs have several advantages that distinguish them from other devices. For example, PSPs are hand-held and do not have to be used with a PlayStation 2 or 3 to function. They also have good battery life and can be charged via an AC adapter or USB connection. PSPs also have a relatively large screen compared to other hand-held game consoles and have virtually the same capabilities as a laptop computer.

How to Use a PSP

adhocParty

An adhocParty is a PSP feature that allows users to search for other PSP users in the area and challenge them to a game, share media, or even communicate via Skype without using cables or the Internet connection. This is possible because the adhocParty feature uses a radio signal similar to that of a walkie talkie in order to locate other PSP users. A user can interact with one opponent or with a group of users .

PlayStation Store

The PlayStation Store allows users to purchase new music, game data, and more. The PlayStation Store features game addons, demos, trailers, PS One games, new games, and even comics. The PlayStation Store can be accessed by using a PSP’s XMB feature or the Media Go system and downloading the files to a computer, then transferring them to a PSP. Fortunately, all PSPs feature at least one USB port so users are always able to connect a USB flash drive or USB external hard drive to their PSP in order to transfer files or store additional media.

Layout and Appearance

PSP users are able to modify their background image, background color and theme. Background colors can be changed and can also be set to automatically change once a month. Custom themes can be found on the PlayStation Store as well as other places online and users can even design their own themes by using the Custom Theme Converter and a graphics editor in order to design both background images and PSP icons.

System Updates

While most gaming platforms allow the users to update the system, PSP takes it to a whole new level. PSP users can update their PSPs automatically by simply connecting to the Internet via their PSP device. Updates may include security features, new functions, and specific game-related updates in the form of demos and extended game play. Recent PSP updates have allowed users to have better access to the PlayStation Store, fast Internet access directly from within the XMB (Xcross Media Bar) screen, new patterns for music visualization, and extended controls for video content.
